Volunteer/Auxiliary Opportunities

The volunteer/auxiliary members at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System are a valued group of individuals. They provide outstanding customer service and assistance to both visitors and patients at Prairie Lakes in a variety of capacities.

Volunteers
Prairie Lakes Healthcare System welcomes people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities to volunteer. Many of our volunteers are homemakers, working people, and retired people. Volunteers at Prairie Lakes serve in a variety of areas including working in the hospital gift shop, manning the reception desk, helping families in the Same-Day Surgery waiting area, and volunteering at the reception desk at the Caring Club House.

    How to Become a Volunteer
    People interested in becoming a volunteer at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System need to complete an application for volunteer services. These applications are available from the Volunteer Services office or by calling 882-7716.
    When the application is reviewed by the Volunteer Services Department, an appointment is made for an interview with the Coordinator of Volunteer Services. This interview gives the coordinator an opportunity to get to know the applicant's interests, skills, motivations, goals, and schedules. It also allows the volunteer an opportunity to assess the department and decide if volunteer service at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System will meet their personal goals.

    The new volunteer participates in a general orientation to the facility and is given a tour before actually working. Volunteers receive training in the specific duties of their assignment from appropriate staff members.

    Volunteer Qualifications
    Who can volunteer? People of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities may volunteer at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System including students, homemakers, working people and retired people.
    As a volunteer, the basic qualifications include an interest in the community, a desire to be involved, a good attitude, discretion, and dependability. It is important to possess the ability to work with groups as well as with individuals. Using tact, patience, and kindness will enhance your working skills. Some volunteer jobs require skills related to the area served.

    Hospice Volunteering
    Trained Hospice Volunteers provide various services for Hospice patients and their families. Services might include companionship, friendly visits, letter writing, meal preparation, reading or spiritual care. Some volunteers choose to assist staff with clerical help, craft projects, or phone calls. Hospice matches the volunteers needs, experience, and talents with the postion for him or her.
