As spring quickly approaches, we must prepare for severe weather. Severe thunderstorms can bring dangerous conditions like strong winds, heavy rain, flooding, tornadoes, lightning, and even hail. Preparation is key as severe thunderstorms can develop quickly, leaving little time to react.
- Stay informed—monitor weather alerts from trusted sources and have a plan in place for emergencies.
- Create an emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, a battery-operated radio and first-aid supplies.
- Secure outdoor items that could become hazards in high winds like patio furniture or outdoor play equipment.
- Identify the safest locations in your home to shelter from the storm such as a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor. Remember to stay away from windows.
- Create a family communications plan that includes an emergency meeting place and related information.
- If evacuation is necessary, have a clear route planned prior to the weather event.
- By taking early precautions, you can minimize risks and be ready for whatever nature throws your way.
