Losing a loved one to suicide can be devastating to endure. With suicide rates on the rise, this has become a public health crisis that affects everyone. When a person is gone, it impacts everyone around them, and it can take months to years for people to cope with that grief. It is natural to feel a wide range of emotions when someone you cared about commits suicide, and all these feelings are valid. Shock, confusion, anger, sadness, and guilt are just some of the reactions, and it is important to take your time to go through all of these emotional stages. Seeking aid from friends, family, and mental health professionals is the best way to cope while taking as much time as needed.

Here are some other things you can do that may help you during this time:

Supportive Hands small

  • Take care of yourself: Taking care of your physical and mental health is key as the risk of depression and suicide is increased in people who lost a loved one. Making sure you are getting enough sleep, eating well, socializing with others, and continuing with your daily activities are some ways to take care of your well-being.

  • Find ways to cope: Healthy ways to deal with grief can include meditating, exercising, journaling, or spending time in nature.

  • Remember the good times: During this time, it is natural to focus on the death and think about what you could have done to prevent it. However, try looking back on the good memories instead. By doing this, you can keep their memory alive, honor their life, and cherish your bond.

  • Reach out to your circle: You can find solace in a religious leader, family member, or friend to help process your emotions.

  • Seek support from others: There are many support groups available that focus on this type of grief. Connecting with others experiencing a similar loss can provide a sense of understanding and alleviate the feeling of being alone in this battle.

After a loss like this, there is a grieving period. Healing takes time, and it is okay to ask for help when you need it. By taking care of yourself and reaching out to others, you can find a way to move forward in life and cope with this loss. Prairie Lakes Healthcare System offers a free Grief Support Group series twice a year that was created as a safe space for those coping with loss to find connection and comfort.

If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, it is important to seek help as soon as possible. Many organizations and hotlines are available to assist, such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline in the United States.
