Celebrating the holiday season provides plenty of opportunity to enjoy a celebratory concoction, but many more Americans are turning to "mocktails" as a healthier and safer choice.
Mocktails can be a healthier option because they eliminate the empty calories found in alcohol, are more hydrating, and are safe for everyone including those with certain medical conditions who cannot drink any alcohol. In addition, they keep pedestrians and other vehicles safe by ensuring sober drivers.
The Watertown Healthy Youth Coalition and the NE Prevention Resource Center (HSA) have compiled several delicious drink recipes that are sure to wow your guests and help you enjoy a sober celebration:
Non-Boozy Mint Mojito
2 L club soda
2 tsp agave
1 small bunch of mint
2 fresh limes, sliced lengthwise
Ice
Fill glass halfway with ice, add club soda, agave, 3 slightly squeezed lemons and mint leaves. Stir & Enjoy!
In addition to providing non-alcoholic beverage options, it's important to be a responsible host:
- Keep a number for a local cab company handy
- Plan to be sober yourself
- Never serve alcohol to minors
- Never force drinks on guests or rush to refill their empty glasses
- Always serve food with alcohol
- Stop serving alcohol one hour before the party is expected to end
