Enjoying fireworks in the driveway or nearby field might seem like a festive and traditional way to celebrate summer and Independence Day. However, thousands of people, most of them children, teens and young adults, are injured each year while using fireworks. Most of these injuries happen in the weeks around the 4th of July.

In 2023 the Consumer Product Safety Commission received reports of eight deaths and about 9,700 people were treated in US hospital emergency departments for firework injuries. Teens 15-19 has the highest estimated rate of emergency department-treated fireworks-related injuries. Children ages 5-9 has the second highest rate. Among parts of the body most often burned or wounded by fireworks were hands and fingers (35%), head, face, and ears (22%) and eyes (19%).

The good news is that there are other ways to celebrate America's Independence without risking a visit to the ER.

  • View fireworks from a safe distance
  • Enjoy fireworks at a public display
  • Wave a glow stick or a US flag instead of a sparkler
  • Noise makers are loud and proud
  • Outdoor movie night
  • Red, white and blue silly string
  • Make a patriotic craft with the family
  • Throw a birthday party for the USA and don't forget the cake!

There are several safe and family-friendly events planned around the Watertown area to celebrate the 4th of July:

  • July 3rd:
    • 6:00 pm - 11:00 pm - Family firework lighting stations at the Premier Softball Complex. This event will also include various games & activities for the entire family to enjoy!
    • Lighting stations are first come - first served and will include safety glass, water access, and firework disposal areas
  • July 4th:
    • 1:45 pm - 4th of July Parade Candy Toss
    • 2:00 pm - 4th of July Parade starts at 4th & Kemp and continues west to Watertown Stadium
    • 9:45 pm - City of Watertown Fireworks Show at Anza Soccer Field.
      • According to the City of Watertown, this will be one of the largest fireworks displays in South Dakota

Help keep the holiday fun and safe by leaving the fireworks to trained professionals and using your common sense.
