Many of us will be celebrating America's birthday this 4th of July by heading to the beach, but are we as prepared as possible?
While swimming, be careful of rip currents and waves that can you force you under water- especially small children and pets. To protect yourself, only swim at beaches with lifeguards, and never swim alone. If you do get caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim along the shore while you call for help. Always supervise young children and inexperienced swimmers.
Remember that even on the water, you can become dehydrated in excessive heat and prolonged sun exposure. Bring plenty of water and wear light, loose-fitting clothing while applying sunscreen regularly. Try to set up your picnic area under a shade umbrella or tree.
Summer thunderstorms are common in our area. If you are near or in the water and hear thunder or see lightning, immediately get out of the water and find shelter in an enclosed building or hard-topped vehicle.
Stay safe and enjoy making those summer memories!
