WATERTOWN, S.D. – July 16, 2024 – Prairie Lakes Healthcare System is proud to announce they have been named to Becker's Hospital Review's 100 Great Community Hospitals list for 2024.

The community hospitals honored on the list portray clinical and academic excellence, personalized and holistic care, and overall improved health to their communities. The Becker's editorial team selected hospitals based on nominations and considered several outside rankings and ratings organizations, including U.S. News & World Report, Healthgrades, CMS, the National Rural Health Association and The Chartis Center for Rural Health.

"This honor reflects the dedication and hard work of our entire team," said John Allen, CEO of Prairie Lakes Healthcare System. "We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of care for patients in Watertown and the rural communities we serve."

In the last year, Prairie Lakes Healthcare System has received several significant recognitions including: The College of Cardiology’s Platinum Performance Achievement Award for care of heart attack patients, Top 20 Rural and Community Hospital recognition by the National Rural Health Association, a Patient Centered Medical Home Achievement in primary care, and a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. These awards and recognitions all contributed to Prairie Lakes being chosen for Becker’s Hospital 2024 Great Community Hospital list.

Prairie Lakes was one of two South Dakota hospitals to make the list.

Prairie Lakes Athletic Training goes beyond high school sports. Strength & Conditioning Coach Aaron Jung has been working with South Shore native Spencer Waege while he’s been home this summer preparing to play for the Green Bay Packers. aaron and spencer

When Spencer was looking for an experienced and dedicated coach that knows football, knows what it takes to train a professional athlete with very specific techniques, he didn’t have to look far. Aaron knows football – as a Watertown Arrow (2008), starting defensive tackle of Augustana University, and Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Morningside University (Sioux City, IA). He knows what it takes to train elite athletes – he was a NCAA DII All-American shot-put thrower. Aaron also knows how to train specific techniques, and around various injuries, by earning his master’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Mary (Bismark, ND).

Spencer knew he needed to stay focused and work on his skills, technique, and conditioning throughout the summer so he would be prepared to compete with other elite athletes to become a defensive tackle for the Green Bay Packers. As accomplished as he already has been - at NDSU he was All-American and finalist for the Buck Buchanan FCS Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2022 – Spencer knows there is always more work to do.

He really appreciated having an experienced and knowledgeable strength and conditioning coach right here in Watertown that knows how to train him to meet his specific goals as he works toward advancing his NFL career. Last season, Spencer joined the San Francisco 49ers as a free agent before they went all the way to the Super Bowl. Now, with the experience of being on the sidelines of a game of that caliber, Spencer is more ready than ever to give it his all at the Green Bay Packers training camp starting July 17th.

WATERTOWN, S.D. – July 12, 2024 – Prairie Lakes Healthcare System has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award for the second consecutive year in a row. Prairie Lakes is one of only 259 hospitals nationwide to receive the honor.

Kalaga web cathlabDr. Ravi Kalaga, Interventional Cardiologist

The award recognizes Prairie Lakes Healthcare System's commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Prairie Lakes has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

"This achievement is possible only because of the shared camaraderie and spirit within our organization," said Dr. Ravi Kalaga, Interventional Cardiologist at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System. "It also reflects the compassionate and high-quality care our teams are dedicated to delivering consistently to our patients."

To receive the Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, Prairie Lakes has demonstrated sustained achievement in the Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023) and performed at the highest level for specific performance measures. Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.

"Earning this national award again is a remarkable achievement for Prairie Lakes," said John Allen, Chief Executive Officer of Prairie Lakes Healthcare System. "It highlights the exceptional care and successful teamwork by our Cardiac Cath Lab, Emergency Department, Cardiology Clinic, and Rehabilitation teams that withhold these high standards of care."

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that over 800,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others.

Chest Pain ̶ MI Registry empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients.

The American College of Cardiology (ACC) is the global leader in transforming cardiovascular care and improving heart health for all. As the preeminent source of professional medical education for the entire cardiovascular care team since 1949, ACC credentials cardiovascular professionals in over 140 countries who meet stringent qualifications and leads in the formation of health policy, standards and guidelines. The Blood Mobile will be parked outside of the Prairie Lakes Specialty Clinic from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm. on Tuesday, August 13th!

What can be done to make sure your friends, neighbors, and family receive the blood they need? It’s simple – donate blood to the Community Blood Bank.

* UPDATE: All donors will receive a $10 Hy-Vee gift card! *

Ten reasons why you should give blood:

  1. You can save up to 3 lives!
  2. Not everyone is eligible to donate blood. Only 38% of the population can donate, so if you're able, you are a selected minority.
  3. Your body will make new blood. It takes about 24 hours to replace plasma and about 4-6 weeks to replace red blood cells.
  4. Giving blood is not painful. You may feel a slight prick initially but it doesn't last long.
  5. Donating blood burns calories! Your body will burn approximately 650 calories just by donating.
  6. You get a free well-check. Before you give, the phlebotomist will check your blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and hemoglobin levels. You may also be screened by HIV, Hepatitis, and other diseases.
  7. It takes only 30 to 40 minutes of your time.
  8. You feel a boost in confidence and your emotional well-being knowing that you have done a good deel and are a part of saving lives.
  9. There is no substitute for human blood. Blood can not be manufactured in any way and it always in high demand.
  10. You may be one of the 25% of people who need blood donation one day.

Donation times are available from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and again from 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Check-in is in the Prairie Lakes Specialty Clinic main lobby.

For many patients, keeping track of appointments, prescription refills, and specialists can be overwhelming. Even more so when a patient has multiple health conditions which they are receiving care for. Recently, Prairie Lakes Primary Care implemented a new care management program, called ChartSpan, that keeps all of their information in one place and easy to access on a digital device. Previously, this has all been managed by the Primary Care case managers. ChartSpan will now handle patient enrollment, education, and communication with patients' part of the Chronic Care Management (CCM) program. chartspan benefits

Medicare patients using ChartSpan have access to a 24/7 nurse line, personalized care plans, and other benefits:

  • A dedicated clinician
  • Help with medication refills, appointment scheduling, and accessing test results
  • Comprehensive care plans for each patient
  • Support for transportation and mobility needs
  • Help achieving healthcare goals
  • Assistance with Social Determinants of Health Support for caregivers and family members

The CCM program provides more support to our patients with multiple chronic conditions. It will engage with our patients monthly, help them play an active role in their care management, and help them meet their preventive care goals. ChartSpan is essentially a remote extension of your primary care provider’s care team.

Chartspan will reach out to patients, but patients will be encouraged to call Chartspan if any questions or needs arise.

Prairie Lakes Healthcare System continues to improve our communication and ease of access to medical information for our patients making it as convenient as possible to get the exceptional care you need.

The Prairie Lakes Cancer Center is celebrating 25 years of providing exceptional cancer treatment to residents of Watertown and surrounding areas in 2024. To commemorate the occasion, local business leaders and members of the Watertown Chamber of Commerce were invited into the facility to learn more about the providers, treatments, equipment, and staff that make the Prairie Lakes Cancer Center so special.

Visitors were treated to appetizers and refreshments as they made their way through a self-guided tour of the various treatment areas to get a better understanding of equipment, medication, and procedures used for specific cancer patients to best fight their individual cancer battle. Providers and staff were available to answer questions and demonstrate equipment. Joni Speech

Dr. Joni Buechler, Radiation Oncologist, gave a passionate speech about the importance of having a facility so close to home for our patients as they are receiving cancer treatment. Dr. Dan Reiffenberger, Chief Medical Officer, also elaborated on how special the Prairie Lakes Cancer Center was when the facility was built in 1999.

Visitors were able to enter a drawing to win a Prairie Lakes ‘Fun in the Sun” Prize Pack and pick up other promotional items. In addition, blankets were ordered specifically for our Prairie Lakes Cancer Center patients to offer warmth and comfort as they receive their treatments.

Visuals used throughout the self-guided tour will be available to view in the Prairie Lakes Main Lobby for the remainder of the week for employees and visitors to enjoy. Next week, they will be moved back into the Prairie Lakes Cancer Center. We encourage Watertown community members to visit the facility and get a better understanding of the work being done and the care being given there.

MCH bathroomThe most recent construction project at PLHS is the exciting upgrade happening in the Maternal Child Health unit. In fact, the focus behind this year's BASH event was to raise money in support of this effort. We checked in with Micki Cordell, Director of Maternal Child Health, to see how the project is progressing.

Micki shared, "The remodel is going great! The painting, flooring, cabinetry, tile vanity, in-floor bathroom heat, tub surround and lighting is in. It looks just beautiful very light and cozy all at the same time. I am in the process of ordering new “dad” beds and the guys are working on the feature wall at the head of the bed today."

When asked how the remodel has effected any patients or staff, Micki added, "The first week that we started the remodel we had a very high census and we had to move OB patients over to 2nd [floor] west. Since then, we haven’t had to do that, but we have had to utilize our three overflow rooms as well as the ER for OB checks. It has been challenging for staff to be short two rooms and trying to juggle moving patients etc. but they are all really excited. Our patients have been very understanding and flexible with the renovation and are excited to see what it will look like."

This construction project is expected to be completed in Fall 2024.

The Prairie Lakes Ear, Nose, and Throat Clinic provides relief to patients suffering from either chronic rhinitis or nasal obstruction. Dr. Mancell believes care begins with listening to each patient’s needs, providing education and including the patient in the decision-making process.

VIVAER® TREATMENT Vivaer Normal vs Obstructed

VivAer Treatment is used to relieve nasal obstruction which causes many people to experience difficulty breathing through their nose, habitual snoring, interrupted sleep, and fatigue. Until now, finding a long-term solution often meant surgery. Now, Dr. Mancell may be able to offer you lasting relief by performing a non-invasive VivAer treatment to open your nasal airway.

Benefits of VivAer® Treatment:

  • Lasting Relief. 97% of patients experienced significant improvement in nasal breathing.
  • Non-invasive solution. Minimal discomfort, no incisions, and can be performed in our office.
  • Live better. Clinically shown to significantly improve quality of life and provide long-lasting relief.

RHINAER® TREATMENT Rhinaer Normal vs Obstructed

If you suffer from constant runny nose and often post-nasal drip, congestion, coughing, nasal itching, and sneezing you may have chronic rhinitis. For many patients, these symptoms may be caused by abnormal signals in the nose. Now, Dr. Mancell can offer you RhinAer to disrupt these signals and provide lasting relief. In a clinical study, patients treated with RhinAer experienced significant relief from chronic rhinitis symptoms.

Benefits of RhinAer® Treatment:

  • Lasting Relief: Provides lasting relief of symptoms including runny nose, post-nasal drip, and chronic cough.
  • Non-invasive solution: Minimal discomfort, no incisions, and can be performed in our office. Many patients even return to normal daily activities the same day as the procedure.
  • Live better: In a clinical study, patients reported significant improvements in their symptoms and quality of life.

If either of these procedures sound like they could provide you with relief, call the Prairie Lakes ENT Clinic today at 605-882-7740. No referral is necessary.
