Infant loss is an unfortunate reality for many expectant parents as they look to grow their families.  Miscarriage and stillbirth are both terms describing pregnancy loss.  Miscarriage is defined as a loss before 20 weeks of pregnancy, while stillbirth is considered to be 20 weeks of gestation or later.

  • Most miscarriages happen before the 12th week of pregnancy, affecting about 10-15 in 100 pregnancies.
  • About 1-5 in 100 pregnancies result in second-trimester miscarriage.
  • Approximately 1 in 160 pregnancies at 20 weeks or beyond are stillbirths.
  • In the United States, approximately 24,000 babies are stillborn each year.

We are so sorry if you have experienced a loss.  Please feel free to reach out to our Infant Loss Coordinators at 605-882-7628 if you have concerns, questions, or need further resources.
